Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to bring your request before God.

Easter Sunday

Mary stood outside the tomb crying. She saw two angels seated there who asked, “Woman, why are you crying?” (John 20:11-13).

“Why are you crying??”

We all know about tears of grief.

In 1994, Kelly Clem was pastor of the Goshen UMC in Alabama. She and husband, Dale, had two kids: Sarah, age 2 and Hannah, age 4. Hannah was special, so full of life and love. Days before Palm Sunday, she asked: “Mommy, will you and daddy and Sarah and me all die at the same time?”

What had brought that on? “Well,” Kelly said, “we may not die at the same time, but I believe we’ll all be together again.” Hannah said, “OK! When you die, you get buried. Then you go live with God.”

Then Hannah was back to her child’s world.

What happened on the following Palm Sunday tested the faith of all. It was a church service like no other for the 146 attending. As it started, a tornado struck with no warning. Twenty were killed including six children; one was Hannah.

Days later on Easter, two hundred worshipers gathered in the ruins of the church. Kelly’s first words were, “I can’t think of any other place I’d rather be, can you?”

In July, Kelly, Sarah, and Dale celebrated Hannah’s birthday. They recalled her words about death spoken a few days before she died and her simple faith that God is good and life with him follows death. Kelly said that God was reminding them through Hannah, that they have a simple, but profound approach to life – to live deep, to love much, and to have faith.

Isn’t that what Easter wants to teach us and what Mary discovered on that first Easter? That storms come; Good Fridays come. But they’re always followed by Easter Sundays. By Miles Holladay
